lean champions and a pyramid effect

There is so much work that needs to be done.

As professionals we have both normal tasks which must be completed and strategic projects to take the business further. When we see a problem – we (usually) get a group of SME’s together and start pounding out solutions. You may use the A3 or another method but the point is that we recognize we need a team to do this. So why does it have to stop there? What if you could have people usings a pyramid concept to multiple the efforts? I believe you could apply a champion model to nearly any subject matter expert led work group(s).

  • First, set a group of tools that you want to use in your organization. So, for example, you may determine that 5S and Problem Solving are the key functions that will take your business to the next level.
  • The champion model will need to have a structure which can allow you to influence them (potentially) as well as spread the tasks at hand across the organization.
  • If you already have an SME, utilize their knowledge to either be the champion of facilitate the next champion.
  • If you have the ability to send that person off for training it may be a wise investment up front.
  • Consider creating a plan (“plan with the end in mind” Covey) which takes the organization to some Utopian state.
  • Set up meeting intervals and empower the champion to direct groups as needed to get the needle moved towards your end state.
  • Lastly, be patient. Culture takes time and if forced it could be met with resistance. Create the need (pull) and the rest will come. If the team wants to live in the Utopia  – it is a “team” effort to build it.
